We’ve talked about Dell UMPCs before. But that was way back in April… on the 1st of April, in fact. We’ve just received some new information from a source who has proven 100% reliable in the past. And it also jives with Microsoft’s recent UMPC reboot and the new influx of new manufacturers and models.

Bottom-line? A Dell UMPC is officially on the drawing board and slated for release within the next 12 months. Not many specifics, but the designers are looking to differentiate from the pack with a design that is “indicative of the one shown in the promotional videos where the screen ‘turns out’ to reveal a keyboard.” Dell is apparently working to create a device that “appears” as small as possible. I don’t know what “appears as small as possible” actually means, but I would imagine it has to do with a small screen bezels and very rounded corners/edges… unless they are going to deviate from the standard 7″ screen size. Which might be possible given those recent Micorsoft comments and this little comment:

“Internally, the new computer isn’t really being called a UMPC too much anymore. They seem more comfortable with the term ‘Axim Evolution.’”

Is that a brand name? An internal code name? Or just the design team being nostalgic? I have no idea, but the possibility of a Dell UMPC just went up a couple of points in the credibility book.

With rumors of Dell producing a umpc could othe r manufactures such Sony and Samsung offer their umpcs at a lower price point. And if dell does produce one I might to hold off on a new umpc purchase for a while because of all the bundled software already in included in current models.

I still cling to hope for a “pocketable” UMPC (at least in a pair of baggy cargo pants with giant pockets, or a vest with giant pockets. This provides a bit of faint hope.

Ideal specs. 5″ screen, 1 lb, 1 inch thin.

Yes, yes, I know…..

Gylman, it’s called the Sony Vaio VGN-U. Except it’s 1.2″ thick. Find one on eBay; they’re not too expensive anymore.

Aw man. I have a dell 700M and it still continues to rock and I bought it at $700 bucks!

If Dell can make a 5″ 1024×800, 1″ to 1.5″ thick, SSD 32gigs, 2gigs of RAM, compact flash slot, and my most important request is 8 hours of batter life that would be great!!!

I really see no need for a keyboard, if you can believe me! I don’t want a desktop replacement, just something to browse the web, watch videos, MP3, and general task while im out and about. If the iphone doesn’t need a keyboard, this shouldn’t either. I rather them take out the keyboard and put more battery power for me :) . I travel alot and juice is the most important thing.

Pricepoint ~1K would be great as well.

Dell, means never having to say “May I honor your warranty”. No thanks, their service is completely useless and impossible to get.

If Dell do offer a UMPC at the price of Asus (i.e. IRO 500 USD) then it would cause problems for a lot of their other ranges, such as XPS 1330. I’d suggest they bring out an XPS1000 — 10 inch with 64GB SSD and Atom CPU with XPS quality build, for $500!
