I needed an SD card for my PDA last week so I headed over to geek heaven Fry’s to pick one up that was on sale. As usual, I did a circle around the store to peruse all of the gadgetry that my wife won’t let me have. And I stumbled upon something I hadn’t seen before.
It was a Sony UX180P.
It was my first time actually holding one. It was magic! After having my way with the unit for a good 20 minutes I realized that the Sony marketing boys had done a decent job of actually giving the device a very nice presentation. As it is a very small device and tucked away among rows and rows of laptops it could be very, very easy to simply miss the Sony UMPC (thankfully, there were no TabletPCs also screaming for eye-contact… Fry’s appears have to discontinued carrying that freakshow form factor). As you can see from the pic above, the Sony device has a very inviting presentation. It’s slick, informative and colorful. It draws the eye. And once that happens, the actual device does the rest.

So, how did the Sony UMPC’s presentation at retail compare to the Q1s? Well, to cut to the chase, it kicked it’s ass. Despite being on an end-cap, with a much larger area to call its own, the Q1 itself was lost in a sea of black. There were no compelling selling points. No colors to draw the eye. And it was a good 30 or 40 feet from its peers in laptop row. It is extremely easy to walk right past the Samsung and not know that you were inches from being able to hold the coolest platform this side of the Sony. Add to that a bunch of clutter in terms of keyboard accessories that flanked the demo unit and a mass of Samsung printers that were stored underneath it, you have an underwhelming presence for such a worthy device.
In this particular battle between the Q1 and the UX180P, it is Sony who is victorious!

LOL! Great post guys!!!! I loved it!
