I have seen a lot of people asking “How do you install programs in a UMPC if they do not have CD/DVD Drives? And believe me, there are many different ways to go around this task but I’ll show today using a series of screen shots how to use a little tool from Microsoft to mimic the existence of a CD Drive in your UMPC.

Virtual CD is a unsupported Microsoft tool that allows to mount a CD image (iso) and have it recognized by XP as a CD ROM drive. The following pictures show the steps to follow to use this tool that can be download here.

If you have multiple CDs that you need to use in one single installation you have to open Virtual CD again and eject current mounted CD and complete again the same process shown in these pictures.

Thanks for the info. However I am having a problem when Streets & Trips asks for the second disk (Run disk). I “eject” & re-mount the second .iso file, but the setup program doesn’t recognize it. Any suggestions?

try this, dismount, remove, add the drive with the same letter and mount the second CD. That’s what I did it. I have found that using the eject does not work too well with multiple disk installations.
