Laptop upgrades are not difficult to complete yourself, and there are three key upgrades that you can easily accomplish to make your laptop run faster.  These will also give your laptop a higher resale value when you decide to replace it.

One of the most simple laptop upgrades to complete yourself is to upgrade your operating system. If you are running Windows XP or Windows Media Center, upgrading to Windows Vista is a good idea.  You will be able to take advantage of the many features of Windows Vista, as well as enhance the speed of your system.  An upgrade to Windows Vista for the Home Basic edition is under $100 and is worth it to enhance the efficiency of your system. No, this is not some new version of spam. Microsoft, Samsung and Hope for Education have joined together to give way tech to schools. There’s a grand prize that includes a $100k in Samsung hardware and a $100k in Microsoft software. That’s 125 Q1 Ultra’s! 30 first prizes are $30k each in hardware/software for your school.

You have do some work, a 100 word essay is required. If your writing skills are weak, start blogging to sharpen them up! You have until 7/22/07 to enter. My entry is in so the rest of you will have to settle for the $30k first prizes.

Oh, yeah, if you submit a winning essay (grand or first prize) not only does your school win, YOU win a Q1 as well. My wife is already claiming dibs on the new Q1. I say if she wants to win, she can write her own essay! Good thing she doesn’t read this blog. A pox on anyone who points her to this entry.

So go write! Too bad you can’t submit entries in ink!

Yeah, I just tested. I ordered the last week the 2 GB SODIMM Modul from UpgradeComputerMemory.com and as soon as I received today I opened my Samsung Q1 with Celeron Processor and switched the RAM modules. And here is the first result:

Every technology has advantages and disadvantages. A digitizer is more precise: you can hover, you can have an eraser included in your digipen, etc, etc… It’s the ideal thing to have when you have a 12 inches (and u)p screen. On the other hand, we have touch screens where — with a little bit of work — you can do almost do the same thing as with a digitizer, but less precise, no hover, etc. You can use it with your fingers or even a toothpick. AND IT’S CHEAPER than a digitizer. These advantages are what make me think that a touch screen is a must have in any UMPC.

Samsung has officially released Vista drivers for the Q1. This is great news! Now I can peel off of a few of those Q1P drivers and replace them with official Q1 drivers. No HID interface drivers for the touch screen that I can see so you’ll want to stick with ctitanic’s.

There is some new stuff too. What’s a Hot Start Shell anyway? I guess I’ll need to install it to find out!

PC World is saying that Vista’s ReadyBoost doesn’t provide much of a boost. ReadyBoost has the potential to be a huge benefit for UMPC which can have lower memory limits than other devices. I’ve been using it in my UMPC but I can’t say that I see that much of difference when using it. I do wonder about yanking it out when I go mobile. Do I have to wait for the light to quit flashing? Could you use a USB hub to plug in a bunch of thumb drives and get a bigger benefit? Hmmm… I guess I’ll have to talk to my wife about upping my thumb drive budget.

In a public mea culpa, David De Jean in Information Week realized that there is life in the UMPC space. In a post entitled “OK, so I was wrong about Origami” he says he was wrong about Microsoft’s Origami platform. Origami was not an end, not a product but a reflection of what Microsoft thought a device between a laptop and a cell phone should look like. The market has shifted some from Microsoft’s original vision but there’s a lot of cool UMPC hardware out there and a lot more to come. It’s nice to see that some journalists have enough brass to admit when they’re wrong.

Kevin Tofel of jkOnTheRun managed to shoehorn a 2 gig ram module into his Q1P and it appears to be working. He details others who’ve tried this without success (so far!) on a Q1b and and eoV7110.

So who’s up for trying this in an original Q1?
